ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

The Dylan Campbell Foundation is committed to empowering young baseball players from underserved communities, with a special focus on ensuring African American players have continued access to the game. Our mission is to break down barriers and provide opportunities for these young athletes to thrive both on and off the field.

Why This Mission Matters

Despite the rich history of African American players in baseball, the participation of African American youth in the sport has significantly declined. As of 2023, African American players made up only 6.2% of MLB Rosters, a stark contrast to the 18% in 1991.

Several factors contribute to this decline:

  • Cost: The high cost of equipment, participation and travel often makes baseball out of reach for the average family.
  • Racism and Bias: Experiences of racism and lack of representation can deter young African American players from pursuing the sport.
  • Alternative and more popular sports:  Many young athletes are drawn to other sports like football and basketball, which often have more visible African America roles models and an easier pathway to participation.

By addressing these challenges, The Dylan Campbell Foundation aims to create a supportive environment where young African American players can develop their skills build confidence and pursue their dreams in baseball. Through our programs, our goal is to provide the necessary resources, mentorship, exposure and opportunities to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has the chance to play and excel in the game they love.
